Sauropelta was a plant-eating ankylosaur that lived in the Early Cretaceous to Late Cretaceous, 121 to 94 million years ago. It belongs to the family Nodosauridae.
The Paleobiology Database lists 21 finds of Sauropelta, from Montana and Wyoming. Its fossils come from the Cloverly Formation. It was named by Ostrom in 1970.
